Traffic signs are more or less the same as those in other European
countries. Warning signs are triangular and have a red frame
around them set on a yellow background, signs of prohibition
are round and have a red frame against a white background, and
signs directing the traffic are blue.
Although on the whole road signs are adequate, if you want to
drive safely you’d better not count on them one hundred
percent. Consider the first 100 kilometres a trial period in
which you familiarise yourself with the Greek roads, and be
very careful.
Keep in mind that, more often than not, speed limits are unreasonably
low. This means that you will frequently see signs on the national
roads or the main provincial roads that impose a speed limit
of 40, 30, or even 5 kilometres per hour! These signs are the
easiest way the authorities have found to prevent accidents
at the most dangerous sites and should be looked upon as danger
signals. However, do not take the speed limits too seriously,
or you may be run over by a bus!
